The Essential Fall Wardrobe

It’s here, the best time of the year!

I love fall. My birthday is in fall, Thanksgiving is in fall, it’s not horrendously hot in the fall, and it’s the lead up to absolute best part of the year (meaning Christmas!)

I also have a well documented love of being cozy. So fall style and clothing is it for me. I love boots, jeans, coats, sweaters, and jackets. New this year though, is an appreciation for the colors. I had my colors analyzed and done by House of Colour this year and found out I am, in fact, an autumn. Now colors are a whole different conversation that I could go into but regardless of my feelings on that, it’s my first year going through my season with the knowledge of the colors.

In general, I already was wearing most of my colors but also I’m less concerned about the colors of the fall wardrobe than the comfort and ease of it. I almost treat the fashion as a uniform. I have a formula and I go from there, it’s very simple but always good.

Step 1: Bottoms

Maybe this is controversial, but I’m a jeans girlie. I love how thick and sturdy they are. High waisted jeans that don’t fall down or need a belt are probably the most life changing thing of the last decade. My absolute favorite jeans are Madewell. Madewell is going to be heavily featured in this post because I think they are the fall fashion champions. Their muted colors, greens and yellows, gold jewelry, and rich brown leathers are fall colors 101. They just do it so well but what they are best at is denim.

I have a few pairs in a medium wash that I think are just perfect for the season. They can be dressed up for a night event or worn to the office for a casual put together look. I love the perfect vintage fit and the options they have for sizing. I don’t necessarily love the price, but I try to jump on sales, coupons, or birthday member benefits to buy them.

Step 2: Tops

Now that you’ve got well fitting, easy to pair jeans, you need to add your top. I’m a big fan of button up tops for warmer days or to layer but for a true fall outfit, you need a sweater.

Collared Sweater

I love that there are now so many sweater cuts to choose from. I love a cropped sweater or a chunky knit but I also really want to add more collared sweaters to my collections. I haven’t moved into cardigans as standalone sweater tops but I’m not opposed. My go-to for a really crisp fall day is a turtle neck. I love burrowing down and pulling up the neckline and just being warm. I’ve got my eye on this striped number from Gap as well as several from H&M.

Step 3: Boots

With every step I feel like each piece is the most integral part of the fall uniform and each piece is my favorite. But this is one of my favorite parts, really!

I would wear boots or booties of some sort everyday if I could. I loved a heeled bootie or a Chelsea boot. I like crocodile skin boots or knee high boots. Any boots you’ve got, I love them and want them.

For my everyday outfit I most often go for a black Chelsea boot but I do also love a neutral suede heeled boot too. It just depends what other colors you’ve got going on. Either way you can’t really go wrong and they are all fall wardrobe staples.

Step 4: Coat

When I was in the 6th grade, I got a black and white houndstooth peacoat for my birthday. It was Candies brand from Kohls and absolutely iconic. Another girl in my class got the same coat in a different color because of how cool it was. And that was when my love for a good coat was born.

My current fall go-to is a checked number I got from Goodwill for $1. I took out some shoulder pads and took off some length and suddenly it looked like a new coat. I cannot tell you the number of times people on the street have asked me where I got it from.

But if you don’t absolutely luck out it like I did, Abercrombie is killing it with their coats right now. They have so many different colors and patterns but they are so popular they always sell out. J. Crew is another option for a very classic, good quality coat that is going to last you years and always look good.

Step 5: Accessories

Now that you’ve got your staple pieces it’s time to spice it up. Get out your favorite gold jewelry and beautiful watches and choose a bag to haul all your junk.

I’m a fan of the always classic cognac colored Madewell Transport Camera Bag. It’s on the smaller side but holds all I need it to. Recently, I got a Coach Mollie Bucket Bag 22 in a gorgeous burgundy. It can fit a water bottle, a book, and an ipad so I’ve got no complaints. I also love the contrast top handle.
